Bio

Gabrielle Tyrie (b.1999) is an artist. Her practice is motivated by visualizing scientific concepts and seeks to make as a means of discovery. Influenced by her education at TMU, Gabrielle is interested in early photography. She works primarily in cyanotype and uses the medium to connect and reference its history. Gabrielle values the microscopic and macro view of her work. She finds meaning in the photosensitive molecules that make up her images as well as the images themselves. Research is important to Gabrielle’s work. Learning is not just a process of gaining knowledge but one that has a philosophical effect. She is fascinated by pseudo, fantastic and actual empirical methods. She engages with her body as a means to generate and build work and it often appears as the subject of it. She finds it quite a natural practice to absorb and articulate ideas with her body.

Gabrielle is a graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University with a BFA in Photography Studies. Her work has been in a variety of TMU publications and exhibitions. It has been collected through TMU Artspace Gallery, Open Studio and can be found permanently in the TMU Library Special Collections. Gabrielle was the winner of her senior-year Thesis Exhibition and was featured in the CBC Arts article, “Class of 2021: Explore exceptional student photography from a pandemic year”. She lives in Toronto.
